<< Fact Home Teach-At-Home
The Numerals
Roman Numerals  are still in use today and they are fun to know.  There are only a few symbols and rules that you must know to read and write Roman Numerals.   Look at the symbols in the list below.  Notice that the symbols are just letters that represent numbers.
I- the letter I equals the number 1
V- the letter V equals the number 5
X- the letter X equals the number 10
L- the letter L equals the number 50
C- the letter C equals the number 100
D- the letter D equals the number 500
M- the letter M equals the number 1,000
The Rules
The rules are pretty simple too - just practice a few and you will soon master Roman Numerals.
Rules:
  • If one Roman Numeral is followed by a larger one then subtract the first number from the second.
    • example: IV means  5 - 1 = 4   (think "one less than five")
    • example: IX means 10 - 1 = 9  (think "one less than ten")

  • If one Roman Numeral is followed by one that is equal or smaller then add them together.
    • example: VII means 5 + 1 + 1 = 7
    • example: XVIII means 10 + 5 +1 + 1 + 1 = 18
